Introduction

Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits | Teacher Page

You are a jazz musician in the 1940s and 1950s.   Swing music is popular now and you're a great success at playing it.  Being one of the top musicians around, clubs are booking you for gigs from coast to coast.  Fans are lining up to see you in the United States.  In Europe you are listed as a top 10 selling recording artists; in other words [borrowing a line from  James Cagney's movie White Heat] "top of the world Ma".  Of course in the movie James Cagney's character kills himself but you, you are living large.
Lately you've had serious thoughts about swing.  As far as you're concerned, swing has swung long enough and it's time for something new.  You have a concept in mind but to get it out there to the public, you are going to need some unusual suspects.

The Task

Recruit 5 unusual suspects (musicians) who posses radically unique styles of playing.   Visit the clubs such musicians are likely to frequent.  When you find them, recruit them.  Tell them some of what they're doing in swing fits this new style you've been working on.   Make this new sound work.  Since everything has a name, give this new style a name.   Keep this in mind: if other musicians adopt your new style, you will be a success.  More importantly, if the public likes and buys it you will have achieved your task.  With your intrepidacious spirit in tact, go  recruit a band and make this new sound.

If the final product involves using some tool (e.g., HyperStudio, the Web, video), mention it here.

The Process

The brass section task is to recruit a trumpet player.  The woodwind section is to recruit a saxophonist.  The rhythm section will need to find 3 people; a pianist, a bass player and drummer. Each section is to check the appropriate link to recruit their Bebop musician.

  1. For your section find the musician who is the best for your section.
  2. What city is the best place to find great musicians?
  3. While there visit the clubs and check out the musicians.
  4. Click here to get your passport back in time to Club Minton.
  5. Find one and get to know about their style of play.
  6. See if they would be willing to play in your band.
  7. Recruit them to play this style music.
  8. Describe the theoretical aspects of Bebop.
  9. Rehearse a few Bebop songs.
  10. After a few rehearsal give this new style a name that fits.
  11. Now introduce this style to the public.
  12. Evaluate the public's response to it.
  13. What is the response of other musicians to Bebop?
  14. Name other musicians who are  playing  this style.
  15. Talk about the popularity of Bebop 4 years later.
  16. How is the response to Bebop in Europe?
  17. Describe the soloist style  performance in Bebop.
  18. Get back with the other sections to discuss who you recruited.
  19. Name your musician and tell how they fit the Bebop style.
  20. Two people from you section will do a verbal report on the musician.
  21. One person from each team will play the role of the musician.
  22. The musicians will form a quintet and play the song Night in Tunisia.
  23. Congratulations!  You have created a new that will last for generations to come.

Conclusion

Upon completion of this WebQuestyou will have learned to distinguish Bebop from all other styles of jazz.  You will know one musician from another by the way they play their instruments, their phrasing, in soloes and the characteristic sound of that musician on that particular instrument.  Finally, all sections will link to these sites and together decide which cd you'd like to see in the jazz music library for Bebop that covers your section.  When you've chosen the cd you want contact me at donwheel@acninc.net .
