After studying this unit,
students will learn about themselves, learn about careers, research
careers, and make a career decision. Researching careers is an
essential part of Career Planning.

Aim
The purpose of this curriculum is to introduce students to
the world of work, learn what careers are available, and help students
make an
informed career choice.

Rationale
Planning is facilitated by students who will complete an
online career guide assessment and a resume. Students will use
the opportunity
to find out what careers are available to them. Students will
take the
knowledge that they will gain from doing this project and can apply it
for
future needs.

Goals and Objectives
At the conclusion of this
unit,
students will:

Describe how their personality may influence their career choice.
- Discuss the
many types of career clusters.
- Describe
the wide range of jobs within career clusters.
- Identify
careers and the occupations that interest them.
- Learn how
to research careers and occupations.
- Evaluate careers based on educational requirements, working hours,
working
conditions, pay, personal lifestyles, and goals.
- Produce a quality resume free of errors, properly
formatted, and professional looking.

Audience
The audience for this
unit is students 16 years of age or older/students eligible to work via
a work
permit.

Prerequisites
Interest in learning what
career
you would like to have for the rest of your working life.
Students should
be technologically proficient through the Information Technology class

complete the WebQuest.

Instructional Plan
Students will go into the
Career
Choices menu, and research careers for which they feel they may have an
interest in. Students will answer the questions associated with
each career and
print their Career Profile to turn in. Students will then go to
the
resume section and complete a resume which will be used for a future
interview.

Textbook:
From School to Work, pen(cil), paper, computer with internet connection.

Assessment and Evaluation
Students are responsible for
completing a resume, which will be error-free, organized, formatted,
technically sound, and complete. The on-line career assessment for
their career choices will describe working hours, working conditions,
pay, education required, and need for positions in the industry.

The
Illinois Learning Standards that are covered by this lesson are the
following:

information and ideas.

will be able to use appropriate instruments, electronic equipment,

Implementation
1. Students will take a basic technology
quiz to assess technological skills.
2. Students may complete assignment at home,
in
class, before/after school in one of the computer labs, as time allows.
3. Assignment is an individual assignment,
students
will be given a printed list of available websites and alternate
worksites.
4. WebQuest will be discussed in class, so
that
students will know what is expected of them, how their WebQuest will be
evaluated,
and the due date for
completion.
5. If any assistance is needed inside of
class,
just raise your hand.
6. No food or drink is allowed in any
classroom,
at any time, for any reason.
7. The
WebQuest will be assigned with more than enough time to complete so
that
all students can achieve success.
8. Teacher will have students check all sites
to
ensure that they are working.
9.
The length of time to complete this assignment
will be one week.
