Discipline 1-2-3
In room 209 we are implementing
the 1-2-3 Behavior Policy. Please read to learn of what this policy
consists.
If a
Rule
is broken, student will a receive
a warning of the number "1." I will tell the student "You have
one for doing ....." Nothing else will be said. If
the student corrects the behavior, no further consequences will be enforced.
If student violates a rule again, student gets a warning of "2." If
student stops at that point, nothing further is done. However, if,
within the a.m. session or the p.m.
session, the student has accumulated 3 counts, student
will be in "time out." This is an area of the room (or in someone else's
classroom in severe cases) sectioned off for student to get 5-10 minutes
of time away from the rest of the class. This will allow the other
students to receive instruction without further disruption. This will also
allow the "timed-out" student to get some time to him/herself to calm down
and focus on what is expected of him or her without getting yelled at. (See
Expectations
.)
If a student gets 2 time outs in one day, parent will get a
call. Parent is expected to speak to child about this behavior after
school. A parent
is encouraged to write a note to send back to school with the child the
following day letting me know the parent has spoken to the child about this
behavior.
If a student gets 3 time outs in
a week, a misconduct report is filed. Depending on the violation or
the
Uniform Discipline Code
, parent may be asked to come in for a conference. An administrator
may be included in the conference. (Please note: Fighting constitutes
suspension according to Group 3. Repeated fighting constitutes a minimum
of 1-5 days, a maximum of 6-10 days.)
After 3 time outs in one week, student will receive a misconduct report
for each additional time out.
IMPORTANT: CLEAN SLATE If a student does not get to
Count 3 in an a.m. or p.m. session, child returns to class with a clean slate.
S/he begins at 0 again. After one week, students'
time out counts are back to 0, and child starts off week clean.
ALSO: When a child has served the full "time out" of 5-10 minutes,
NOTHING IS SAID by the teacher. Student will return to his/her desk and
class continues. There is no reason for the teacher to waste valuable
class time further reprimanding the student. Student will participate
in the consequences, and class continues.
*Teacher reserves the rights to alter this 1-2-3 Behavior Policy in accordance
with students' behavior throughout the year.
The important, and nice part about this technique is that there should
be no yelling from anyone. Students know the rules, and should go
into "time out" when appropriate without words. When student has fulfilled
required time there, class should go on without incident. Emotion
is kept out so that the action is corrected and the child is not humiliated.
This technique is being implemented with help
from the book 1-2-3 Magic:
Effective Discipline for Children 2-12 by Thomas W. Phelan,
Ph.D.
