Words and Pictures

Communication Through Visual Art

 

You will learn about the relationship of words, pictures, and symbols in appropriate communication and expression.

There are three modules in this curriculum web site. Each one is designed to help the student to learn about the visual arts. This learning is composed of art appreciation, art history, and actual art making. The vehicle for this lesson will be artforms that are available to us on a routine basis. They are comic books, paper currency, and postage stamps. These items are the result of a very sophisticated visual arts process yet are rarely appreciated as true works of visual art.

FOCUS:

MODULE 1: Comic book and related material that were derived from the Black American or African experience will be our primary source material. This will highlight a growing alternative movement in the world of sequential illustration. Keep in mind that all comic books tend to include the same basic visual and literary elements and principles.

MODULE 2: Printed currencies from various parts of the modern world will be the reference in this lesson. It is multicultural, geo-political, and interdisciplinary. It encourages the learner to become aware of the visual arts process as it is utilized in various countries.

MODULE 3: Postage stamps are traveling works of are that communicate so many things while providing a function that we all need. This lesson will focus on the design, function, history, and cultural value of this mass produced form of functional visual art.

GOAL: For each student to become knowledgeable about the role of visual art as it relates to communication and expression. This will be a multicultural and interdisciplinary perspective.Each student will learn to create works of art based on guidelines and concepts that will encourage learning and participation.

PREREQUSITES: Each student should be comfortable with using a computer for word processing, and browsing the internet. Basic drawing and writing skills are a must.

RATIONALE: Human development, in terms of cultures or societies, is directly related to the level of visual communication that is institutionalized and practiced by specific groups of people over a period of time.

OBJECTIVES: Students will be exposed to a variety of material that demonstrates traditional and creative approaches to visual art.

ACTIVITIES: Reading,Viewing ,Drawing, Designing, Critiquing, Creating, Writing, Presenting, and Appreciating

EVALUATION: Each assignment will be graded and returned to the student. Special attention will be given to effort, organization, attention to details, and presentation.

CLOSING: Each student will have a greater awareness of the impact of visual communication and expression.
