Activity 3: Highlights Video
In a group of 3-5, discuss the following scenario:
You are the Athletic Director of your high school. Throughout the year you have been taking videos of students participating in a number of sports. You decide to create a highlights video by splicing the video segments together and adding some background music from your favorite CDs. You play this video for the athletes and their parents at the end-of-the-year sports banquet.
- Discuss the copyright implications of this act. Where, if any does
the copyright violation lie? In splicing together the video segments?
In adding music? In playing the video for an audience?
- Would it make a difference (in terms of copyright violation) if your
school made copies of the video available for sale to the athletes and
their families? What if you made it freely available for download over
the web?
