Copyright Issues
Activity 5: Book Reviews

In a group of 3-5, discuss the following scenario:
You are an English teacher whose seventh-grade class is writing book reviews of books they have recently read. These reviews consist of a short synopsis of the story, a critical review of the book, and a scanned-in picture of the book's cover. You make these reviews available on your schools web site for other seventh graders to access when choosing books to read.

  1. Discuss the copyright implications of this act. Are the images of the book covers a copyright issue?

  2. What if one of your students included an excerpt of the book in his review? Would the length of the excerpt be a factor in determining whether this is a copyright violation?
