AUDIO

1. Audio File Formats- Just as there are specific file formats needed for graphics, there are also formats needed if you choose to add audio to your web site.

AIFF is a native audio format for the Macintosh.   WAV is native for Windows.

"AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is one of the two most-used audio file formats used in the Apple Macintosh operating sytem. AIFF is sometimes referred to as "Apple Interchange File Format."  The extension for this file type is ".aif" when it is used on a PC. On a Mac, the file extension is not needed."  From Whatis.com

"Wave file is an audio file format, created by Microsoft, that has become a standard PC audio file format for everything from system and game sounds to CD-quality audio.  A Wave file is identified by a file name extension of WAV (.wav).  Used primarily in PCs, the Wave file format has been accepted as a viable interchange medium for other computer platforms, such as Macintosh. This allows content developers to freely move audio files between platforms for processing, for example."  From Whatis.com

Both platforms can play and save sounds in AU, SND, and MPEG audio formats. Both also use the MIDI format, but only for music.

2. Adding Sound to Web Pages
To save sound files that have been selected from the web, right click (hold down the mouse button for a MAC over a sound link until a popup menu appears, and choose "Save this Link As."  You can then insert the audio file into the web page.  Audio files are linked in the same way as any other pages would be linked except it must be indicated that it is an audio file (*.au.)
