Evaluating Web-Based Lessons: Teaching guide

Aim

The purpose of the Evaluation of Web-Based Lessons module is to provide WIT participants with guidelines and tools to assess their own web based projects and evaluate other web-based lessons to best determine those that fit their needs in the classroom.

Rationale

To avoid wasted time and effort and maintain a high level of engagment on the part of the student, teachers must always assess Web-based lessons, whether created by themselves or other teachers, to determine if they are of high quality and meet the unique needs of the individual classroom. An evaluation of this sort also allows the teacher to identify potential problems in the design of the lesson and modify it to fit the needs of the individual classroom.

Subject Matter

In order to evaluate Web-based lessons consistently and thoroughly, a rubric is created. The rubric can be printed out and notes can be kept on a checklist as the teacher evaluates the lesson and the Web sites affiliated with the lesson.

Instructional Plan

The instructor should introduce the goal and scope of this module to the group. Participants should work individually or in small groups to explore and find useful Web-based lessons on the Internet. This should take approximately one hour.

Once the participants have identified valuable lessons on the Web, they should move on to the next section, Evaluating Web-Based Lessons. The participants should discuss the given criteria as a class or in small groups. If the participants discuss in small groups, each group should make a presentation to their class so that no issue is overlooked. The particpants can use the rubric as it is presented or make create their own rubric to use in the next activity.

Once a rubric for evaluating web-based lessons has been created, the participants should print out the rubric and checklist and use it to evaluate the Web-based lessons they found in Finding Web-Based Lessons.

Self-Assessment

WIT participants should have access to these rubrics throughout WIT for use in guiding their own work. The participants should then use the criteria established in the module to evaluate and assess their own work.
