Double-Clicking -- Opening Your New World

You will like this Double-Click thingy. It allows you to "open" stuff on your computer.

Opening an Icon means:

  • If it's a volume or a folder, you get a directory window that shows the contents of that volume or folder.
    • Note: A "volume" could be a hard drive, floppy disk, CD, networked folder -- any container of files or folder.
  • If it's a document, you launch the application that created the document and then open that document in a window
  • If it's an application, you launch (or open) that application

What is a Double-Click?

To double-click, click the mouse button twice, rapidly, while the pointer is over
the picture part of the icon.

Notes:

Don't move the mouse between clicks or the Mac "thinks" you're dragging that icon.

If you click over the name part of the icon the system will think you're trying to edit the name, not open the icon.

Activity #1: Opening the Trash / Recycle Bin

  1. Roll the mouse so that the tip of the arrow is within the picture part of the Trash (for Macintosh) or Recycle Bin (for Windows) icon.
  2. Double-clic (that is: click the mouse button twice, rapidly, without moving the mouse between clicks). (This may take some practice.)
  3. When you do this a window opens on the screen. This directory window shows you the contents of the Trash / Recycle Bin.
  4. Now that you've opened a windows, here's the short version on how to close a window:

If you click the Close Box on the window it will close.

On Windows
On a Mac
The close box is in the upper right of the window and looks like this:

The window close X box on Windows.

The close box is in the upper left of the window and looks like this:

The Close box on a Macintosh window.

Now that you've opened a window showing the contents of the Trash / Recycle Bin, close that window (using the above screen shots to guide you).

Then open the Trash / Recycle Bin icon and close the reuslting window a few times.
