What You'll Learn in this Section

You're going to delve into the wonderful world of links, but we're not talking about golf courses here. Read on to find out what links are and why they are important..

What are Links?

Hypertext links, more commonly referred to as links, make it possible for someone browsing the Internet to get from page to page or site to site.

Links are important because they are what connect the pages of the Internet together.

What you'll be doing is selecting a portion of text or an image, then applying a link to it by pointing it toward a certain place on the Internet.

There are 3 Kinds of Links

  1. A link that takes you to a page outside of your web site, such as www.yahoo.com or www.cnn.com.
  2. A link that takes you to another page within your own site. An example of this is when you hit the left or right arrow buttons at the bottom of the pages in this lesson; you are simply taken to another page within the web site.
  3. The third kind of link is called a target. A target takes you to another part of the page you are on. Throughout this lesson, you may have noticed the signs that say "To the Top!" These are targets because they simply take you to the top of the current page you are on.

When you click on a series of links, you are said to be "surfing" the net.
