Text...Not Just Letters, but Letters Put Together to Form Words!

What You'll Learn in This Section

In this section you'll learn that typing in Composer is just like typing in Word or Works or whatever word processing software you happen to be stuck with. We'll change fonts, font sizes, and even change font colors ("Ooooh," goes the audience.). Hold on to your mouse, because you're about to start your very first web page.

An Added Bonus for you Multi-Taskers

Now, at the same time you're learning the basic components of Composer (notice the fine use of alliteration), you'll also be starting on your very own classroom web site. Click on the miniature version of the sample classroom web site below to check it out. When you're done laughing at, er, I mean looking at the sample site, come on back, now, ya' hear.

Sample Classroom Web Site

Use this sample site as a guide to learning Composer and try to enjoy yourself. Remember, this is supposed to be fun and it will help you in the long run. In the meantime, however, try to complain as much as possible about how hard this is because I overheard that WIT mentors enjoy troublemakers. It presents them with a challenge, or so they say.

How to Type in Composer

1. To type in Composer, you have to use your fingers to press the keys on the keyboard. The corresponding letters will magically appear on the screen in front of your face! Let me know if you want me to slow down.
  2. Okay, now that you've mastered typing, try typing these words: Mrs. Jones' 5th Grade Class. Feel free to enter your own name and the grade that you teach. If you don't, you're not cool. Did that work? I can't believe that still works.

Changing the Font Size, Style, and Color

For many of you this will be elementary and boring, so skip to the section on changing background colors if you want.
  1. The first thing you do is highlight "Mrs. Jones' 5th Grade Class" or whatever you typed.
  2. Change the size of the text by clicking on the down arrow next to the Font Size icon on the Formatting Toolbar. Choose 14.

3. Change the font style by clicking on the down arrow next to the Font Style icon on the Formatting Toolbar. Choose Comic Sans.

  4. Change the color of the text by clicking on the down arrow next to the Font Color icon on the Formatting Toolbar. Choose whatever color strikes your fancy, but try not to strike anything else. This is a family web site.

Advanced Skills: Bold, Italicize, and Underline

All you have to do is make sure that you've highlighted the text you want to change and then hit the Bold , Italicize , or Underline buttons on the Formatting Toolbars. Get the picture? Good, let's dance.
