The Save As... dialog box is similar for both Windows and Macintosh. This link takes you to an explanation of how to use this dialog box. Here, I'll point out only the differences between the Mac and Windows Save As... dialog box.
You're likely used to the Windows version of the Save As... dialog box which looks like this:
Windows:
And this is the Mac Save As... dialog box looks and works like this:
Mac:

1) Open any application (SimpleText will do)
2) Type a few words into the document window.
3) Call down the File menu and go to Save As... and execute that menu item. This will generate the Save As... dialog box.
4) Type in a file name of Tossme and save it to the desktop. (You can get to the desktop by either calling down the menu at the top and click on Desktop or click on the Desktop button at the right.
This will create a document icon on the desktop named Tossme. You can now delete that file. You've used the Save As... dialog box.
