On Windows PCs you're likely used to opening My Computer to get different volumes (like floppy disks and the C drive or Hard Drive). On the Mac you don't need this intermediary step -- icons you care about appear right on the desktop on the Mac.
The hard drive icon on the Mac appears on the desktop and is often called Macintosh HD. It usually appears in the upper right and looks like this:

When you insert a floppy disk into a Macintosh its icon will appear on the desktop and look like this:

So. It's all there, it just doesn't live inside of something called My Computer.
