List of useful internet terms: bookmark Saving the URL of an interesting website by marking it. By doing this, you will have a collection of your favorite websites and the sites can be rapidly retrieved by clicking its name on your bookmark list. boolean search a system that uses sets to include or exclude search terms. browser A client program such as Internet Explorer or Netscape that allows you to view WWW documents. cookie program that keeps track of the number of programs downloaded by the user during a session. Certain web applications require the user's computer to have cookies so that it can keep track of a user's previously visited pages and entered data. dial-up connection establised to a computer by telephone with the use of a modem. distribution list A list of email addresses which are chained together and given a nickname so that you can send one message to a group of recipients. This is also referred to as a mailing list. Electronic mail that you machine receives and sends. html Hyper Text Markup Language. This is the language that is used to make documents for the World Wide Web. Browsers translate HTML into documents with text, pictures, and sounds. hits a list of links or references that are returned in response to a query. http Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This is the standard language which allows computers to communicated on the web. Internet refers to a worldwide system of linked computer networks that serve as a communication system. link also referred to as "hyperlink;" a connection between two web pages or sites containing related information. meta-search engines Also called metacrawlers. A search engine that automatically looks for the search term given in various search engines such as Yahoo!, Excite or Alta Vista. multimedia integrated use of text, graphics, video, animation, and sound subject directories A "catalog" of websites compiled and maintained by human operators. search engines A collection of web sites organized and maintained by robots that crawl the web and log the words on each page. search tools strategies that a user employs to search the Internet Web Page A document located in the World Wide Web. A web page can have text, images, movies, and sounds.
