Video Software

Beginner

Avid Cinema is one of the easiest capturing and editing programs to learn, even for young students, and allowed for the creation of desktop video movie with sound and titles in less than thirty minutes. Prior to the introduction of iMovie, Avid Cinema shipped with all Macintosh computers, even non-AV ones. Avid no longer sells or supports this product but if you have, or can find a copy, it's still a great introduction to learning how to make desktop movies.

Apple iMovie is a simple, fun program that is easy to learn and will allow you and your students to create hours and hours of great classroom footage. It has a variety of features for capturing, adding effects, and editing footage. You will need a Macintosh computer however to reap the benefits of this software.

Intermediate

Real Producer in its free version is a very scaled back video capture software tool that will also convert your video into a RealPlayer file format. It's not bad if all you want to do is capture and convert video. If cutting scenes together and adding effects and titles are on your agenda, this software won't give you that ability

Advanced

Adobe Premiere v. 6.0 is a high end professional digital video editing software program for users with previous video editing experience. 6.0. has a variety of new features which includes a full control audio mixing panel, RealSystem support for converting files directly for the Web, a built-in media cleaner function to compress files smoothly, and a more comprehensive editing control panel.

Final Cut Pro is Apple's answer to Adobe Premiere. This editing software is for advanced users with prior experience editing video. It contains many of the same features as Adobe Premiere and has audio editing capabilities. You'll need a Macintosh to work on this software too.
