Using your CUIP e-mail account

All participants in WIT 2002 will be given an e-mail address to use during the summer.  This e-mail account will remain active for at least one year.  If you submitted an e-mail address with your WIT application, your CUIP mail has been set to forward to this account.  You will find out how to stop this forward or how to set up a different forward in this handout.

E-mail address

Your e-mail address is  userid@cuip.net

Your userid is your first initial and your last name, or something close to it if that exact form is already taken.  For example, Christie Thomas’s userid is: cthomas.  Therefore, Christie’s e-mail address is cthomas@cuip.net.  Your userid will be given to you as a part of your welcome packet.

A password will be given to you as a part of your welcome packet.  You should change this password as soon as possible.  Directions for changing your password are located at the end of this handout.

Accessing your CUIP e-mail

You can access your e-mail account by using the simple Web mail feature.  The URL for the CUIP Web mail feature is: http://cuip.net/mail/.  To log in to your e-mail account, enter your userid in the Login: dialog box and your password in the Password box:

The first time you log in, you will be taken to a preferences page.  Do not bother with any of the preferences;  scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Accept button to accept the default preferences.

You will immediately go to your Inbox:

Your messages will be listed on the right side of the page.  You can see here that “cthomas” has 3 messages.  To read a message, click on the Subject heading of the e-mail you would like to read:

The message will open in a window at the bottom of the screen:

To reply to the sender of this message, click on the Reply button at the bottom of the window:

Be sure to note the Reply to All button just to the right of the Reply button.  If you click the Reply to all button, your message will be sent to everyone who received this e-mail message.  Be sure that this is what you want to do before choosing this option.

You can also forward this message to someone else by clicking on the Forward button just below the Reply button.

To delete the message, click on the Move to Trash button:

Or, choose the e-mail from the Inbox by clicking in the button box to the left of the message and then clicking on the Move to Trash button at the bottom of the window:

Be sure to empty your trash periodically so that your mailbox does not become full!  To do this:  Use Mailboxes from the left navigation menu.  Click on the Trash folder to open it.  At the bottom of the window, click Delete All Trash:

To compose a new message, click on the Compose button in the left navigation menu:

You must know the e-mail address of the person to whom you are writing.  Enter this e-mail address in the To: field.  You can also copy someone on the e-mail;  to do this, enter this person’s e-mail address in the Cc: field.  You can always remember these e-mail addresses later by saving them to your Address Book;  to do this, click on the Address Book button to the right of the e-mail address you would like to save.  Enter a subject in the Subject: field.  To add an attachment, click on the Add Attachment button and choose the file to be attached from the browser.  Click in the large white dialog box to begin typing your message:

Once you have typed your message, click on the Send button at the bottom of the page to send the e-mail:

To check for new e-mail messages, simply click on the Check for new mail button from the left navigation bar:

How to change your password:

It is highly recommended that you change your password so that it is secure.  Make sure you select a password that you will remember.  Your password should be between 6 and 8 characters and should not contain a word from the dictionary.  The mail server will reject all passwords that contain a dictionary word.

Use telnet or a secure shell to log in to the mail server.  On a Windows machine Use Start | Run. 

In the Open: dialog box, enter telnet cuip.net.  A telnet window will open and ask you for your login;  enter your userid.  At the password prompt, enter your current password.  You will receive a prompt.  At the prompt, type:  passwd:

You will receive a prompt for your current UNIX password;  enter the password initially given to you:

You will then be prompted twice for your new password;  enter the password you will like to have:

Note:  When you type your password, nothing will show up on the screen, not even ******.  This is normal.

If you have successfully changed your password, the following message will appear:

If the mail server did not accept your password, it will ask you to supply a new password.

To change a forward on your account:

All WIT participants who submitted an e-mail address with their WIT application have a forward on their account that forwards all e-mail sent to your WIT account to your personal e-mail account. 

If you prefer not to have WIT e-mail forwarded, you may remove the forward by deleting the .forward file.  To delete the .forward file, type:  rm .forward at the prompt:

Your mail should no longer be forwarded.

If you would like to set up your mail to be forwarded to another e-mail address, at the prompt type:  pico .forward.

This will open a text editing window.  The only thing you need to type is the e-mail address to which you wish to forward your mail:

After you have entered the e-mail address, press <CTRL>o to save the changes, then <CTRL>x to exit the program.  Your mail is now forwarded.

You may also use the Web mail interface to set up a forward.  Click on the Preferences button in the left hand navigation.  Scroll to the bottom of the page.  In the dialog box to the right of the option Forwarding, enter the e-mail address to which you want your mail sent.  Click on the Save and Use button at the bottom of the page.
