Make Folders SSH Secure File Transfer- Telnet-Mini Module

This module takes you through naming files, creating folders, and then using ftp programs to copy files and folders to and from your Internet site. It consists of two information pages, and three mini-modules. Please begin by reading"About Files" page. Then do the "Make Folders" activity. After doing the "Make Folders" activity, proceed to FTP Mini-module, and then the SSH Mini-module.

"About Files" has some necessary information about files, file names, file name extensions, relative file links, absolute files links, etc. Please read it carefully.

The purpose of the Make Folders activity is to encourage you to organize your files in folders so that you will always know what your files are about, and where they are stored on both your computer and the Web Institute for Teachers server. You will need a WIT folder, and inside this, you may need subfolders for images, personal page files, project files, and bookmarks. Make these on the desktop, and then drag them into My Documents, or, on a Macintosh, leave it on the desktop, or drag it onto your hard drive.

We will be using Netscape Composer to create files for our professional homepages and projects. The latest version of Composer does not have the feature that transfers our files onto our Internet site. We will need an ftp program to transfer our files and folders.

The FTP mini-module will show you how to install and use the ACE ftp program. The Ace FTP program is free, and it has many nice features that make it convenient and easy to use. The mini-module will show you how to install and use this program to upload and download files, and/or create folders on your Internet site, and it will describe some of its extra features. Most of the pages are practice activities. You should read the instructions given on each page, and then follow the instructions as an activity.

TheSSH Secure File Transfer mini-module is about a program that will do the essential tasks involved with file transfer. It does not have the extras of the Ace program, but it does have a terminal feature that will allow us to change our passwords. The mini-module will show you how to install and use this program to upload and download files, and/or create folders on your Internet site, and also how to change your Web Institute for Teachers password as necessary. Most of the pages are also practice activities. You should read the instructions given on each page, and then follow the instructions as an activity.

There is also a telnet mini-module listed, but if you and your mentors chose to do the SSH mini-module, you don't need this one. Macintosh users can use telnet to change passwords. If your Mac does not have a telnet program, links to telnet programs for Macintosh are on the pages of this mini-module, or you can find the software by clicking on the software links on the Web Institute for Teachers pages. The telnet mini-module has activities that show how to use Telnet to create folders on your site, and to change your Web Institute for Teachers password.
