FTP, SSH Secure File Transfer, Fetch for Macintosh, and Telnet.
Your group will not need all four.

Ace FTP is a free, full featured ftp program. It
is easy to use, and does about everything you want an ftp program
to do. SSH will do sufficient basic ftp type activities, plus
it has a terminal feature that allows you to do Telnet commands
with it. The advantage over the basic Telnet program is that it
sends passwords over the net in a secure, coded form, thus keeping
evildoers from snagging passwords and wreaking havoc on our sites.
Telnet information can be used for Macintosh.

Mentors may want to decide whether to:

Do both the ACE and the SSH sections, and let
participants choose which one they want to use for ftp.

Use Ace only, and forget password changing,
                    or use Telnet

Use SSH only, and use it for both ftp and terminal
                    password changing.

First Section: (10 Minutes )File
Information , offers suggestions and information about
files that may be useful to mentors and participants. It is intended
to be an independent activity, perhaps to be suggested by mentors
to participants as need is recognized. However, mentors may want
emphasize the parts about naming files, if they see a need.

Second Section: (15+ Minutes) Organize. In the first section,
                Make Folders , participants
will create a WIT desktop folder with subfolders to hold some
of their files. Content and titles for subfolders have been suggested,
but it is to be expected that modifications will be made to fit.
Mentors may choose to demonstrate the creation of folders, and
then let participants complete it. Note, there are two pages,
                Windows, and Macintosh,
with specific instructions for making folders. Use them if necessary.

Third Section: (30 to 45 Minutes) FTP Activities Mini-Module.
The next section is about using the ftp program. There are 6 activities.
Mentors may want to lead the group through the activities, or
assign them as an independently completed activities if most of
the group can work independantly. . Participants will also need
to do the activities on their home computers.

The first, Download
and Install the Program, leads them through the process
of downloading the AceFTP program from the Web Institute for
Teachers server, and installing it onto their workstations.
This will probably not be necessary on the lab computers, but
participants who do not have ftp at home will need download
                  information.

The second, Introduction
to AceFTP, is a basic introduction to the program. Participants
are introduced to menu commands, icons, and windows.

The third, Security,
deals with how to avoid a password security problem on lab computers.
Make sure that participants use only the "Connect"
icon, not the "Connect to URL" icon.

The fourth, "Set
up your Connection, leads participants through the process
of creating a connection to their own folders on the Web Institute
                  for Teachers server.

The fifth, Uploading
your Wit Folder, leads participants through the process
of uploading the WIT folder that they created in the folder
                  creation activity.

An optional activity, Uploading
and Downloading, is the same activity as the fifth, except
it involves files instead of folders.

Fourth Section: (30 to 45 Minutes ) Using SSH Secure File
Transfer. This program provides basic ftp utilities, plus
a terminal utility that uses Telnet commands. Mentors may want
to lead the group through the activities, or assign them as an
independently completed activities if most of the group can work
                independantly. There are four pages.

The first, Download
& Install, gives directions for the download and installation
of the program. Have them read the page. They will probably
not need to do this on laboratory computers, but they may want
                  to do it at home.

The second, Connecting
with SSH, gives directions for connecting to the Web Institute
for Teachers. Participants read the directions, and then make
                  their connections.

The third, Changing
your password with SSH, shows how to change passwords. Participants
read the directions, and then change their passwords.

The fourth, Uploading
and Downloading with SSH, tells how to use the "Operations"
features of the SSH menubar. Participant read instructions,
then create folders, and then can upload, and download folders
                  and files.

The Fifth Section: (15 Minutes) Telnet, provides, in two
pages, directions for using basic telnet to create
                folders, and to change passwords.
They can be used if necessary. There are links to download sites
for Macintosh programs on these pages. Mac users can use the telnet
                commands listed on these pages.

Participants will use files and folders to create a usable, orderly
