Intro
Unwanted horizontal spaces can be one of the most annoying things
about using a WYSIWYG program to make web pages. But,
with a little knowledge of HTML, you can remedy the situation
quickly and easily.
The code that makes a horizontal space in HTML is
called a non-breaking space and it looks like this:
So, if you have spaces you don't want, you need to
find the spot in the page you are working on and remove that code.
Conversely, if you want to add horizontal spaces,
you simply add " " to your HTML for as many
spaces as you need.
Demo
Let's try adding spaces in Dreamweaver. Follow these easy
steps:
- Using your browser, save this page by choosing File | Save
As...
- Change the file name to "unwanted_spaces," then
click "Save."
- In Dreamweaver, open the page you just saved.
- Choose Window | Code Inspector.
A new window will appear, allowing you to edit the HTML.
- Scroll down until you find the place in the code where you
see these words:
There should be two spaces after a period. Right now there is
only one space.
In the HTML, add a non-breaking space ( ) after the
period.
- Close out of the Code Inspector by hitting the "X"
in the corner. There should now be two spaces between the sentences.
- Show your work to your mentor(s) and you're ready to move
on.
Now, select "Line Breaks" from the dropdown menu.
