Digital Libraries in the Classroom
(A Special Section of WIT 2003)

This section will teach participants how to locate and use Web-based resources in the classroom, computer lab, and library media center with a focus on using digital libraries. Participants will explore the types of resources available via the Web (including digital libraries), learn successful strategies for finding relevant materials, and practice methods of effectively using Web-based resources for instruction and research. The mentors will introduce participants to the eCUIP Digital Library (http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/ecuip/), the University of Chicago/Chicago Public School joint digital library venture, and other invaluable resources to support teaching and learning. In addition, participants will learn to create simple Web pages for the classroom, and use the Inquiry Page (http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu) as a planning tool for the design of lesson plans and learner-centered activities.

The Digital Library section is designed for library media specialists, classroom teachers, and educational technology specialists interested in exploring new ways of using Web-based resources for instruction. Participants must be comfortable using a mouse and keyboard, and must know how to copy and move files between diskettes and the computer. Participants also should have access to an Internet-connected computer during WIT so they can complete out-of-class assignments.

Upon completion of this section of WIT, participants will be able to:
• Incorporate and effectively use eCUIP and other digital libraries in your classroom, library, or computer lab.
• Employ various search strategies and tools to efficiently locate Web resources.
• Thoughtfully evaluate Web-based educational activities and resources.
• Gain information literacy and assessment skills.
• Send and receive e-mails, including attachments.
• Create and maintain your own Inquiry Page.
• Design and create a simple instructional Web page.

NOTE: This special section will take place in the AFTERNOON (1 pm to 5 pm) and will be located in a training lab in the Regenstein Library on the University campus.

Please e-mail Christie Thomas (christie@cuip.uchicago.edu) or Craig Cunningham
(c-cunningham@uchicago.edu) to indicate your interest in the Digital Library section of WIT or with questions.
