IOTA Homeroom: July 18

Note: This weekend there is
Homework for the Brave

Materials

Access to

I.

  1. Site of the day (Sandra). Word of the day.
  2. Review yesterday's activities.
  3. Remind students about the value of checking the IOTA webpage and lesson plans rather than just following along with mentors in class.

II.

    1. Create a webquest folder inside personal folder on desktop.
      • open personal folder on desktop
      • Right click inside folder
      • click "New"
      • click "Folder"
      • type "webquest" (no capitals)
      • click away from the folder
    2. Show WebQuest templates and how to find them online
    3. Download WebQuest Templates from http://webquest.sdsu.edu/materials.htm
into webquest folder (inside personal folder) on desktop. (choose Frame Version or "Traditional, No-Frame Version". It is not a good idea to choose "Frame Version with Graphic Text Rollovers")
    4. Unzip templates. This will create a new folder inside your webquest folder.
    5. Copy (don't move) templates into body of webquest folder. (This leaves a spare in the new folder in case you need them.)
    6. To copy the files (and NOT move them):

      • In the file that contains the templates, click once on the first file in the list (this should select it, not open it.)
      • Move your mouse pointer to the last file in the list. Hold down on the Ctrl key, then click once on the last file. (this should select all the files on the list)
      • RightClick>click "Copy"
      • Move your mouse pointer to the body of the "webquest file".
      • RightClick>click "Paste" (Now all the files you selected before should appear in the webquest folder.)
    7. You may open the templates if you want, but we won't work with them until next week.

Look at clipart sites:
       http://images.google.com/
       http://www.kidsdomain.com/clip/
       http://dgl.microsoft.com/

For animated clip art: http://www.gifs.net/animate/giflist.htm
And, if even more time allows, show how to do simple image processing with MS Paint (Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint)
Download an image to your computer using RightClick>SaveImage
Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint
Pull and drop the image into MS Paint. Then play with the image to see how to resize it, crop it, etc.)

Homework for the Brave

Over the weekend, download your profile page from your website, edit it to correct mistakes and make corrections, and use FTP to send it back to your web site.
Steps:

1. Use netscape to locate your profile page:

  • type your web address in the address line of Netscape (cuip.net/~[your id]
  • click on the file that represents your profile page. Now your profile page will appear on Netscape

    2. Edit the page using Composer

  • In the upper left corner of the Netscape window,
    • Click "File">"Edit Page"
At this point, the page will appear in a Composer format so you can edit it.
Remember to save your work frequently as you edit the page, so that if your computer freezes you won't lose all that effort.

    3. Make changes that seem necessary. Make sure that you are called "Mentor" at the top, that your email address links to your own real email, not to the one left over from the Jay Mulberry profile page, erase links at bottom that aren't really interesting to you and add some that are.

    4. Save your file, using the same name it already has, on your desktop, or whereever you can find it easily. [Note: When it saves, it will automatically save any images, like your picture, that are included on the site.]

    5. Open WS_FTP and transfer your edited webpage back to your space on the server.

Here are the steps for copying something from your computer to the server. The directions are copied from an email I sent on July 16:

1. Start WS_FTP
2. Where it says "Host Name/Address" type "cuip.net" if it isn't already there
["webinstituteforteachers.org" works the same as "cuip.net"]
3. Where it says "User ID" type your WIT username (the one you got when you
started WIT)
4. Where it says "Password" type your WIT password (the one you got when you
started WIT)
5. "Profile Name" is a name you give this connection. It can be anything.
Probably your name would be good, but the computer doesn't care. Once you have
created a profile name you can come back to it in the future and won't have to
type in the address or the initial remote site folder.
6. Click the "Startup" tab at the top of the WS_FTP window
7. For "Initial remote site folder", type "www"

[Note: "Initial Local Folder" is meant to be the folder you work from on your
own computer (where your files come from). "c:\windows\desktop" often works,
but not always it is sometimes hard to figure out, so Bill and I have skipped
that. You might TRY putting "c:\windows\desktop" in that line, I will not use
it in the rest of this explanation because the line won't be the same for
everyone, and it is a confusing thing to explain.]

8. Click "Ok";
This should start the program and a window should appear that shows the
content of your computer (the one you are working on) on the left, and the
contents of your folder on the server on the right.

To copy something from your computer to the server:

1. Position the WS_FTP window so that you can see both it and the file you
wish to copy to the server. If you need to move the WS_FTP windo, put the
mouse arrow in the upper blue part of the window, hold down on the left side of
the mouse and drage the window to where you want it (so you can see the file)

2. Move your mouse arrow to the icon for the file you want to transfer. Hold
down on the left side of the mouse and drag the file to the server side of the
WS_FTP window. Let up on the mouse; this "drops" the file into the server.

Great! You have put a file from your computer onto the server!
