I.
Connecting your computer with the server
- Start WS_FTP
- Where it says "Host Name/Address" type "cuip.net" if that isn't already there
["webinstituteforteachers.org" works the same as "cuip.net"]
- Where it says "User ID" type
your WIT
username (the one you
got when you
started WIT)
- Where it says "Password" type
your WIT
password (the
one you got when you
started WIT)
- Where it says "Profile
Name",
use any name that is easy for you to remember. Everything you type
now will be saved so that all you have to do after this is go to where
it says Profile Name find
the name you gave it, and click "Connect".
- Click the "Startup" tab at the top of the WS_FTP
window
- For "Initial remote site folder",
type "www"
- For "Initial local folder",
type "c:\windows\desktop" if
you are using Windows 95 or 98. If you are using Windows 2000, NT or
XP, leave it blank.
Now click "Ok".
A window will appear that has two screens. The one on the left shows
files and folders in the computer you are working at. The one on
the right
shows what you have on the server.
II. Moving files
from your computer to the server
- Position the WS_FTP window so that you can see both it and
the file you
wish to copy to the server.
If you need to move
the WS_FTP window, put the
mouse arrow in the upper blue part
of the window, hold down on the left
side of
the mouse and drag the window to
where you want it (so you can see
the file).
- Move your mouse arrow to the icon for the file you want
to transfer. [DO NOT TRY TO DRAG AND
DROP WHOLE FOLDERS INTO
THE SERVER. OPEN THE FOLDERS
FIRST AND DRAG THE INDIVIDUAL FILES.]
- Hold
down on the left side of the mouse and drag the file
to the server side of the
WS_FTP window (ie., the right hand side). Let up on the mouse; this "drops" the
file into the server.
Great! You have put a file from your computer onto
the server! Now you might want
use Netscape to look your web directory and see if the file really
got
there:
Type http://cuip.net/~[your own WIT ID] in
the address line and press "Enter".
And you can
click on the name of the file you just
sent to see if it looks the way you expected it to do.
Congratulations! A job well
done!
