NU July 16

  1. Site of the Day
  2. Apple Computer is hosting a Digital Video workshop on Friday from 9 to 11 and from 3 to 5. The workshop will introduce IMovie and will include hands-on opportunities to use IMovie make a curriculum-related video. It is intended for those who have LITTLE OR NO IMovie experience.

  3. Notice: we have been asked not to use floppy disks. CPS is afraid of viruses. (?) If there is a need to transport files between home and lab, use ftp to upload and download the files.
  4. Practice: Why: By learning how to use software, such as Netscape Composer, teachers are able to develop class specific tasks, as well as possibly teach students how to create web pages! —You will be revising the page you made yesterday and creating a search engine list page. Practice Time needed: Less than 30 minutes.
  5. Your profile pages are linked on the projects page. Click here to download the profile page rubric into Word. Then open the projects page and evaluate your profile page. We can take a limited amount of time to make any needed changes.
  6. Types of Web Lessons — AIM: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce and familiarize teachers with a variety of web-based lesson and activity formats. — RATIONALE: After reviewing these formats, teachers will gain effective ways integrate technology into existing units. Becoming familiar with what already exists on the Internet--lesson plans, ongoing projects, references, Web Quests and other learning activities--will give teachers a basis for determining what they might use from the Web and what they might contribute of their own. Having access to a range of strategies will allow teachers to determine what fits best for them, their students, and with their curriculum.
  7. More about Webquests: Start here in the "Explanation" section, which is all about the CONCEPT. Then go on to "Demonstration" and the following sections, where we move from CONCEPT TO CLASSROOM! http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/month8/index.html
  8. Introduction to Webquests — Aim: To introduce participants to the WebQuest as a specific form of guided online learning activity. To provide participants the opportunity to evaluate how they might integrate WebQuests into their curriculum.— Rationale: Education is no longer about memorizing and regurgitating facts. Learners in the 21st Century need to be creative problem-solvers and decision-makers. Our focus as educators is on creating opportunities for learners to make answers, not to simply find them. To encourage our students to think strategically and take responsibility for their learning, we need to throw away the "lecture and test" format and engage learners in a way that encourages high level thinking skills. When implemented correctly, WebQuests give students responsibility for their own learning, focus their use of valuable Internet research time, and provide an opportunity to answer real questions or solve real problems.
  9. 4:45 PM: Feedback
  10. 4:50 PM: Prepare to Leave by 5:00
