1. Introduction of mentors and our goals for you. Before you leave
here in four weeks:
You will feel more comfortable with technology and how to use it
in your school.
You will create a brief personal page and a webquest.
You should feel comfortable asking questions.
You should know places to find information and how to search for
the rest.
You will be comfortable with the process of finding, adapting, and
using educational materials and information from the Internet.
You will understand that this is not about adding additional tasks
to your workload. It is about using technology to make your tasks easier.
You should be able to move files to and from your server folder
with ease.
Introduction of participants
Your goals - what do you expect from this 4 week seminar?
Briefly share background information about yourself.
Share how you've used computers in the past- personally and educationally.
2. Rules for Wadsworth Computer Labs
No food in the Lab.
No open drink containers. (Drinks must have screw tops.)
There are no dumb questions. Questions are welcome and expected.
If you do not understand, always ask. If you have
a question, probably a lot
of people have the same question, or should have it if they are
listening. Your questions will help others in the class as well
as yourself.
Make sure we have shut down all computers at the end of
the day.
Please be prompt. We intend
to start on time every day.
--From the WIT handbook.
Absence policy:
• CPDUs are awarded based on the number of hours you actually attend WIT.
The maximum is 80 hours (16 CEUs). You will lose 1 CPDU for each hour
you are absent.
• If you miss more than 2 days (8 hours) of WIT, you are no longer eligible
for CPS Lane Promotion Credit.
• If you miss more than 2 days (8 hours) of WIT, your stipend (if any,
offered by the Chicago Public Schools to full-time certified teachers)
will be cut. If you miss 6 or more days (24 hours or more) of WIT,
you will no longer be eligible for the stipend.
•
Lateness to sessions will not be tolerated. You are allowed 2 tardies
without penalty. After the first 2, any additional tardies of more than
30 minutes will count as ½ day missed (2 hours absence). In addition,
you may not leave early. If you leave more than 30 minutes early on any
day during WIT, you will be penalized ½ day missed (2 hours
absence).
• A portion of the stipend will depend upon your implementation of your
WIT Webquest or curriculum web. More details will be given at orientation
WIT wants us to take the Preliminary WIT
survey, which is a part of overall program evaluation.
Find and open Netscape Navigator. Go
to Homerooms, then NU homeroom, and to July 8th on the calendar there.
Scroll down to number 6. We will do the required survey.
1. In web browser go to the
url listed above.
2. Scroll down, find WitNu-L,
click on link in left column.
3. On the resulting page, go down to third major section (marked
by beige bars), called "Subscribing
to WitNu-L".
4. Fill in the form. Notes on some form items:
The email address they give must be one they can read mail for in the
WIT lab, and which they can send mail (reply) from.
The password fields are for picking one (not for matching one
already in the system) -- they should make up something they will
remember. The answer
to "Would you like to receive list mail batched
in a daily digest?" should in almost all cases be No.
Press
the Subscribe button to submit the form.
5. Go check your mail, at the address you gave.
6. You should receive a message from the Mailman system. (The subject line
will
be "confirm __" followed by a key number). This is
not the Welcome
message, it's the "confirm" message; you are
not subscribed until you confirm.
To confirm your subscription, do a Reply to the confirm message. Do
not change the address
it's going to, do not change the Subject, do not add or edit anything
in the message body ... just Reply and send off.
7. In a few minutes more you should receive another message. The subject line
will begin with "Welcome ___". This means you have been
successfully subscribed!
