Introduction Juanita

Here you will find a web page that will take you back to the past. You will learn about an ancient American civilization called the Mississippi's, and you would have the opportunity to compare this great civilization with other civilizations you have studied. This Teaching Guide will give you an idea of what you will be able to explore and learn through this web page. Dare to join me on this journey.

Rationale Shawnee
We find ourselves today submerged in a society that does not attempt often enough to expand thier knowledge in unusual ways. It is very important for students to learn about many aspects of the world we live in. The study of animals and their life cycles is valuable to students, because it affords them the opportunity to learn about uncommon species of living things that perhaps are not seen daily. Completing this series of activies will enable students to compare & contrast what they have learned about animal life cycles from various categories. This webquest can also be useful in helping students make connections to any prior knowledge they have about animals and life cycles.

Rationale Milagro
The rainforests provides many products, including medecines, that are used in homes around the world. Due to the deforestation problems, these products, as well as the animals who live in the rainforests, are in danger of becoming extinct. Students need to become aware of the importance of our rainforests.

Instructional Plan Shareen

1. The teacher should read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the students.

2. Ask a few comprehension questions:

* How many stages did the butterfly go through?

*

What was the first stage?
*

What was the second, third, and fourth stage?
*

Why was the caterpillar eating so much?
*

Do caterpillars really eat sausages?
*

What do you think a caterpillar really eats and why?

3. After asking these comprehension questions, the teacher should show the webquest to the class. Make sure to read the webquest out loud to the students. Review and discuss all links created on the webquest. Answer student questions as you go through the webquest.

4. Explain to the students that they are going to become teachers. They will research with a partner to find out the name of each lifecycle stage and what goes into each stage in a butterfly's life cycle.

5. Divide the class up into partners.

6. Handout a folder to each pair of partners. The students should keep all information in the folder.

7. Refer to the folders as "Butterfly Folders"

8. Create a direction page to handout to the students.

9. Students should answer all questions on the direction worksheet and present it to the class.

10. Directions to follow are:

* Name each stage in a butterfly's cycle.
* Answer the questions on the webquest about each stage. (The questions from the webquest can be printed off the webquest and given to the students on a worksheet.....if computers are not available.)
* Describe what caterpillars eat and why? (Refer to back to The Very Hungry Caterpillar)
* How long does a butterfly's lifecycle last??

11. As the teacher, you should have the students divided up into three different centers.

* Science textbooks and science magazines.
* Dictionaries and encyclopedias
* Computers

12. The centers should rotate so every student can navigate through the webquest. Each set of partners should print (with your help) the wordsearch and the fill in the blank worksheet. This should be completed after their direction worksheet is finished.

13. Students should present their direction worksheet. Collect the butterfly folders will all completed material.

Instructional Plan (written for a classroom with one computer and no computer lab) Maureen

1. Begin by doing a KWL about the Deserts in North America. Keep it posted through out so that students can add to it when they learn something new or think of another question.

2. Introduce the web quest and give a quick tour of the home page to explain the buttons and how to navigate.

3. Split the class into four groups and assign one of the Deserts to each group.

4. Assing each member of the group a job. This may change depending on the number of students in the classroom, but one suggestion is to have a botonist, a zoologist, a meteorologist, a mapmaker, a recorder, and a poster designer.

5. In order for me to be able to do this web quest it will become one of my center stations. (when the other stations rotate the computer station will stay) This will give the students about 45 minutes once a week. Each time they get on to work they will have an outline of what they must accomplish that day. For each investigation there is worksheet to be filled out. After they finish the task for that day they may wander through the webquest for the remaining time. The end product will be a poster, to be presented, containing the information about each desert.
