They can do it themselves individually (recommended) or you could do it
for them (deprecated but allowed).

In the examples below, I use a fictional homeroom, Chi. Replace with your
own letter, including in the password (where it is lowercase).

INDIVIDUALLY

1. In web browser go to http://lists.cuip.net/

2. Scroll down, find WitChi-L, click on link in left column.

3. On the resulting page, go down to third major section (marked by beige
bars), called "Subscribing to WitChi-L".

4. Fill in the form. Notes on some form items:
The email address they give must be one they can read mail for in
the WIT lab, and which they can send mail (reply) from.
The password fields are for picking one (not for matching one
already in the system) -- they should make up something they will
remember.
The answer to "Would you like to receive list mail batched in a
daily digest?" should in almost all cases be No.
Press the Subscribe button to submit the form.

5. Go check your mail, at the address you gave.

6. You should receive a message from the Mailman system. (The subject
line will be "confirm __" followed by a key number). This is not the
Welcome message, it's the "confirm" message; you are not subscribed until
you confirm.

To confirm your subscription, do a Reply to the confirm message. Do not
change the address it's going to, do not change the Subject, do not add or
edit anything in the message body ... just Reply and send off.

7. In a few minutes more you should receive another message. The subject
line will begin with "Welcome ___". This means you have been successfully
subscribed!

METHOD WHERE THE MENTOR SUBSCRIBES PEOPLE
FROM THE ADMIN INTERFACE

1. Take an eastbound web browser to the corner of
http://lists.cuip.net/mailman/admin/ and Clicksville.

2. Scroll down, find WitChi-L, and it's clicksville time again.

3. Give the password, w03chi. This is one of those cases where
there's only a password, not a paired name & password.

4. Click "Membership Management". This opens a sublisting. Click "Mass
Subscription".

5. In the large text box field, enter some names/addresses to subscribe.
Give one per line. Each should be in one of three allowed forms:

a. plain address
person@teacher.com
b. name and address, with angle brackets (that's less-than and
greater-than, ">" and "<") surrounding the address proper
Mitch Marks <mmarks@pobox.com>
c. name and address, with double-quotes around the name and angle
brackets around the address proper.
"Bugs Bunny, Jr." <bbunny@fake.con>

The (c) form is required if the name has dangerous punctuation, like that
comma. If it's just letters and spaces, you're safe with (b). It's
useful though not required to have the real name; especially when the
address doesn't make it clear who it belongs to. (The name gets stored in
the listserv data and is output in variuos circumstances.)

When a batch is ready in the text box, SCROLL FURTHER DOWN and press
Submit Your Changes.

6. Your new subscribers will receive Welcome messages. They are
subscribed, and need not do any sort of confirmation or reply.
You (and the other admins for your list) will receive informational
notices of the subscriptions.

Good luck, whatever method you choose I hope it goes well.
