Transferring Files to the Server / "Put"

Now that you have set up the site, now it is time to create files you wish to place on the server.

1.  Open Dreamweaver.  Select the site you wish to work.  For example, if the computer you are currently working has a site defined, the program will open to a blank document.  Otherwise, you will be prompted to define a site.  If your site is not defined, go to Site Definition.   Select the site you wish to use under Window>Site.  The left text box/pull down menu lists site names.   In the example below, the site “Mishawna” has been selected.

NOTE: If you have other files on the server, you may want to place subsequent files in a folder

2. Type in text in the blank document.  Click File>Save.

3. The Save As dialog box will automatically appear because this is the first time you are saving the document.  For the first file you create change the file name to “index.”  (Index files refer to the first page of a website. The index file will serve as the entry page.  It is the only page named index in a site.) IMPORTANT: Do not use capital letters in file names because it tends to cause site/navigation problems. Click Save.  For subsequent files, you may assign any name you choose.

4. As soon as you click save, your file list on the local folder will show the file name.

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4  in order to create two more pages.

6. Now that you have files in the local root folder, you now want to put them on the server.  Files on the server may be accessed from any computer using FTP.  Files in the local root folder may only be accessed from the computer they are stored.  Now you must connect to the server. Click the button that looks like two detached cables  in the assets box. You will be prompted to enter your password.  Click “OK” but do not check “Save Password.”

NOTE:  Once you are connected, the detached cables will change to connected cables.  The server is set to disconnect after server activity ends.  Do not be alarmed if you are disconnected.  If you need to reconnect, repeat step 6.

7. When you connect to the server, the file list will automatically change to Remote View.  Use the pull-down menu to select Local View again.

NOTE: An alternative to switching between Remote and Local Views would be to use the Expand/Collapse button found on the Site assets box on the far right just above the view pull down menu. This button allows you to toggle between the two viewing options.

8. Highlight the files you wish to “Put” on the server.  If you hold the “Shift” button while clicking on files, you may select more than one file at a time.

9. Click on the up arrow key, “Put file(s),” to copy files from the local root folder to the server.  (The down arrow key is used  to copy files from the server to the local root folder identified as “Get file(s)” button.)

10. A dialog box tracking the transfer will appear.  When the file transfer is complete, the dialog box will disappear.

11. Click the pull-down menu to select Remote View to view the files on the server.

Transferring Files from the Server to the Local Root Folder / "Get"

Now that you have placed files on the server, now it is time to “Get” files from the server to your machine/local computer if you change workstations.  This action is used to ensure you work on the latest version of a file.

1.   Open Dreamweaver.  Select the site you have previously defined.  For example, if the computer you are currently working has your site defined, the program will open to a blank document.  Otherwise, you will be prompted to define your site.  If your site is not defined, go to How to Define a Site.   Select the site you wish to use under Window>Site.  The left text box/pull down menu lists site names.   In the example below, the site “Mishawna” has been selected.

2. Click  to connect to the server.  You will be prompted to enter your password.  Click “OK.”

3. Once you connect to the server, you will see the Remote View of your site.  Click/highlight the file(s) you wish to “Get” or place in the Local Root Folder.  It may be easier to highlight a folder of files you wish to update.

4. Click the  in the Site tab to “Get” files from the server.  If asked if you want to “Include Dependent Files,” click Yes.  This dialog box controls the transfer of images or other objects associated with the files you wish to transfer.  This transfer may be time consuming depending upon the type of connection you make to the Internet. If your images are already on the local computer, you should not transfer them again.

5. Once the file transfer is complete, use the pull-down menu to select Local View.  You should see the files you requested from the server.
