Designing in terms of "spaces"

It may be useful to think of your design work in terms of the kinds of spaces in which your students will operate. Click here to download and print this page.

Motivational space – what will attract your students to the activities you will be offering? What will help them learn the most important aspects of the work (rather than, for example, how to get you to give them a reward)? What will keep them focused when things get tough or when they take a long time?

Intellectual space – what do your students know? What can they do? What do they need to know? How do these needs link with with their interests and with the activities you are offering?

Action-space – what will learners do?

Physical space – how will the materials, equipment, and layout of your learning environment help to organize what students do, what they think about, and how they learn?

Time-space – what happens when?

Social space – who do your students work with? How do they rely on each other?
