Student Activity 1

Teacher will introduce the activity by giving some information on him/herself to get the freshmen students motivated.

Student Goal: The activity below is intended to open the doors of communication among your freshmen students.

Timeline: 45 minutes-75 minutes

Getting to Know You

Since some of you are from different elementary schools, we thought a little getting to know you activity would relax you from this exciting new world called high school.

Teacher: continue on the activity above

Students will complete the Getting to Know You activity and upon completing the activity the student will be required to take the Freshmen Orientation quiz below.

State goal:Read with understanding and recall and summarize reading material.

Timeline:25-30 minutes

Student Activity 2

Teacher will give a brief introduction of the History of J.F.K. High School. After reading the material, allow the students to take a quiz.

Student goal: The student will be required to read the history of Kennedy High School which is conveniently located in the freshman orientation curriculum.

Assessment: Evaluation of quiz results. Passing score will be determined by the teacher.

State Goal: Read with understanding and fluency

Timeline: 45 minutes

Student Activity 3

Teacher will give a brief introduction on J.F.K. After reading the material, allow the students to take a quiz.

Student goal: The student will be required to read the profile of JFK and the subsequent links which are conveniently located in the freshman orientation curriculum.

Assessment: Evaluation of quiz results. Passing score determined by the teacher.

State Goal: Read with understanding and fluency

Timeline:45 minutes

Student Activity 4

Teacher guided lesson on Friends. Teacher will real aloud the goals and objective of the activity.

Student goal: Students will engage in a discussion about how to make friends.

State goal: Students will understand how to develop and maintain a friendship.

Assessment: Observation

Student Activity 5

Teacher guided lesson on Wise Choices/Smart Decision. Teacher will explain the five-step strategy which follows:

Student goal: Students will learn how to make good decisions using a five-step process know as the IDEAL strategy

1.Identify the problem.2. Determine all the possible solutions or alternatives.3. Evaluate the positive and negative consequences of each alternative.4. Act develop a plan of action.5. Learn from your decision.

Students will be given two types of scenario's

State goal: Students will understand the importance of good decision-making.

Assessment: Oral presentation

Timeline: 40 minutes

Student Activity 6

Teacher will facilitate a discussion on Test Taking tips.

Student goal: Students will discuss test-taking strategies.

State goal. Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations

Assessment: Oral

Timeline: 30 minutes

Student Activity 7

Teacher will distribute a survey on test taking strategies

Student goal: Student will explore their feelings about test taking.

State goal: Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations

Assessment: Oral quiz

Timeline: 30 minutes

Student Activity 8

Teacher guided lesson on Listening Skills

Student goal: Students will explain why it is important to listen

State goal: Students will understand the importance of developing good listening skills.

Assessment: Observation

Timeline:35 minutes

Student Activity 9

Teacher will guide the students on The Service Learning Community using the freshman orientation web site.

If the need arises, the teacher will give an introduction on using the internet.

Student goal: Students will learn the importance of helping others through giving of their service to help others.

State goal: Read with understanding and apply written information using Standard English.

Assessment: Written feedback (via e-mail) to the teacher

Student Activity 10

Teacher based lessons on Webquest.

Another activity is creating a Webquest. What are webquest? Glad you asked. Webquest are inquiry-oriented web based lessons created by Bernie Dodge in early 1995 at San Diego State University. The lessons in the webquest are fun, informative, educational and real life skill situations.

Teacher will explain the objective of the activity

Student goal: Student will understand the processes involved in searching for a career and looking for a job using the webquest activity "When I Grow Up" by Jamie Sandel and Randy Wells.
