• Break up in groups of 5
• Introduce yourselves to one another and tell what elementary school you came from
• After the introduction, each person will do a round robin and tell the name of everyone in the group, their favorite musical artist, artist latest CD and the elementary school they came from
• At the end of the activity the students who correctly repeated all the information from all the students in the group will win a special Kennedy High School prize

Student Activity 2

Teacher will give a brief introduction of the History of J.F.K. High School. After reading the material, allow the students to take a quiz.

Student goal: The student will be required to read the history of Kennedy High School which is conveniently located in the freshman orientation curriculum.

Assessment: Evaluation of quiz results. Passing score will be determined by the teacher.

Student Activity 3

Teacher will give a brief introduction on J.F.K. After reading the material, allow the students to take a quiz.

Student goal: The student will be required to read the profile of JFK and the subsequent links which are conveniently located in the freshman orientation curriculum.

Student Activity 4

Teacher guided lesson on Friends. Teacher will real aloud the goals and objective of the activity.

Student goal: Students will engage in a discussion about how to make friends.

• Students are to list words on a sheet of paper that would describe the qualities of a friend.
• The students will be divided into small groups.
• Each group will be asked to describe how they make friends
• Each student will list 3 things that they think are important in keeping a good friendship.
• Students will break out of the groups and have an open discussion to share some of their ideas.

State goal: Students will understand how to develop and maintain a friendship.

Assessment: Observation

Student Activity 5

Teacher guided lesson on Wise Choices/Smart Decision. Teacher will explain the five-step strategy which follows:

Student goal: Students will learn how to make good decisions using a five-step process know as the IDEAL strategy

1.Identify the problem.2. Determine all the possible solutions or alternatives.3. Evaluate the positive and negative consequences of each alternative.4. Act develop a plan of action.5. Learn from your decision.

Students will be given two types of scenario's

• Using the worksheets each student will use the five-step strategy to make the best decision
• Upon completion of the activity, two students (volunteers) will discuss the scenario they chose

State goal: Students will understand the importance of good decision-making.

Assessment: Oral presentation

Student Activity 6

Teacher will facilitate a discussion on Test Taking tips.

Student goal: Students will discuss test-taking strategies.

• Students will be asked to discuss the importance of each strategy
• Students will be asked to think about a time that they used any of the test taking strategies
• Students will be asked to describe problems they've had in taking test

State goal. Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations

Assessment: Oral

Timeline: 30 minutes

Student Activity 7

Teacher will distribute a survey on test taking strategies

Student goal: Student will explore their feelings about test taking.

• Each student will participate in an activity that will help them to understand how best to handle stress in taking test
• Upon completion of the activity, students will be asked to respond to the inventory.
• Students will be asked how they can effectively change their feelings about stress and anxiety in taking test.

State goal: Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations

Assessment: Oral quiz

Timeline: 30 minutes

Student Activity 8

Teacher guided lesson on Listening Skills

• Upon completion of the activity, teacher will have an open forum discussion question
• The teacher will remind students at the end of the session that is important for the students to listen long enough before reacting to written or verbal statements

Student goal: Students will explain why it is important to listen

• Students will be divided into small groups (cooperative learning)
• Each group will be assigned a listener and speaker
• The group will choose a subject for the speaker to discuss
• The listener will paraphrase what the speaker has said while the observers (group) will evaluate if the listener paraphrased correctly

State goal: Students will understand the importance of developing good listening skills.

Student Activity 9

Teacher will guide the students on The Service Learning Community using the freshman orientation web site.

If the need arises, the teacher will give an introduction on using the internet.

Student goal: Students will learn the importance of helping others through giving of their service to help others.

• Each student will be asked to go to the freshman orientation web site
• Once the students are in the site, they will go to teenawareness and search for teensurfer.
• Once the student has found the site, they will search for National Kid's Coalition (Volunteer for our Children)
• Students will be directed to pick and organization to work with and write or e-mail that organization for information about service learning.

State goal: Read with understanding and apply written information using Standard English.

Assessment: Written feedback (via e-mail) to the teacher

Student Activity 10

Teacher based lessons on Webquest.

Another activity is creating a Webquest. What are webquest? Glad you asked. Webquest are inquiry-oriented web based lessons created by Bernie Dodge in early 1995 at San Diego State University. The lessons in the webquest are fun, informative, educational and real life skill situations.

Teacher will explain the objective of the activity

• Teacher will break the students up into two (2) groups
• Each group will be responsible for a variety of tasks using the module

Student goal: Student will understand the processes involved in searching for a career and looking for a job using the webquest activity "When I Grow Up" by Jamie Sandel and Randy Wells.

• Students will develop a powerpoint presentation which includes job description, salary and education requirements, and qualifications needed for the job
• Student will use the internet to search for various sites on careers
• Students will write a resume, cover letter and follow up letter
