This WEB QUEST is designed to make learning about Famous Black Americans fun and meaningful for Primary Students.

The aim of this WEB QUEST is for Primary Students to recognize the names and accomplishments of Famous Black Americans.

Rationale

Primary students learn better from visual aides. The children need to visit the Web to learn important information about Famous Black Americans.The children need to learn about Famous Black Americans in order to build self esteem . This is necessary for them to become successful adults.

Audience

This Web Quest is appropriate for Primary Students in Kindergarten, First or Second Grade.

Prerequisites

Before working on this Web Quest site, primary students should have some knowledge of the following.

Subject-Matter

This Web Quest will be incorporated and taught across the curriculum.

Art - Drawings and color sheets will be done.

English - Sentence structure and paragraphs will be required. Story writing will be necessary as well as sequence and order of events. Famous Black Americans will be recognized that are poets and writers.

Phonics - New word recognition will require the children to sound out words phonetically. Some students will also need to use this skill for all of their words.

Mathematics - The teacher will use names and facts to create word problems and everyday problems.

 Music - Music will be played for enrichment and enjoyment. Listening skills will be improved.

Reading - Students will read and be read to for enrichment and enjoyment. Famous Black authors will be recognized for their accomplishments.

Science - Students will recognize the accomplishments and contributions famous scientist have made to society.

Spelling - Spelling skills are very important in all subject areas.

Social Science - History is very important, and especially African American History. Black Americans have made so many contributions that are unknown because they are not mentioned or given any consideration in our history books.

Writing - Writing skills are so important. If they are developed at an early age the students will become better writers.

Instructional Plan

Teacher's Instructional Plan

The teacher will:

Read stories to the students about several  Famous Black Americans

Discuss information read to students about Famous Black Americans (birth, death, inventions, awards, clothing, family structure, living arrangements,housing)

Give a worksheet that corresponds with the story read to be done independently or with teacher assistance (if needed)

Create a Word Wall with the vocabulary from the books and discussions

Create a Classroom Library of Famous Black Americans

Create a "FAMOUS PERSON OF THE DAY" board where a Famous Black American is featured everyday

Students lockers will feature a picture of a Famous Black American of their choice

Teacher Directed/Role Play- Students will be select a Famous Black Americans of their choice and dress up like this person. They will memorize a few important facts to recite. This performance will be done with their classmates as their audience.

Computer Technology- Create a Web Quest in which the children can go online and do an actual quiz and get immediate feedback with answers and scores.
 
 
 

Student's Instructional Plan

Read a story orally and independently about several Famous Black Americans

Discuss orally about the Famous Black Americans (birth, death, inventions, awards, clothing, family structure, living arrangements)

Complete a written worksheet that corresponds with the story that was read to them or they read independently

Create a Black History Vocabulary Book

Create a  Black History Book (using  pictures and worksheets)

Role Play (Dress-Up)- Perform with their classmates as their audience

Computer Technology- Go to Web Sites and Web Quest  to learn more about Famous Black Americans. Go to "Fun Brain" Web Site and take a quiz. Go to "Quia" Web Site and do word puzzle games.

Students will decorate their lockers with pictures of Famous Black Americans (these may be pictures they have drawn or painted)

The Web Quest will be successful if the students can:

The teacher will use the following methods to assess and evaluate the students.

Complete teacher created quizzes in Web Quest

Complete teacher created puzzles and games in Web Quest

Students will be able to orally recall facts about Famous Black Americans

Students will be able to read stories independently and with teacher assistance about Famous Black Americans

Each student will be individually tested on Role Play Activities

The students will take written and oral quizzes

The students will take written and oral test
