Introduction 

In this web quest, jazz band students  will discover how to play jazz Bebop style.   Later they will present reports to the band.  At the jazz concert they will give  brief narrations on Bebop songs and its the artists.   By concert time, they not only will be able to play the music, but will know the history of the music and its musicians.

Aim

The purpose of this web quest is to introduce high school jazz band  students to Be Bop  jazz music.   .

Rationale
 
Whether through headphones, radio or television videos,  jazz band students are always singing or listening to their favorite hip hop, r&b and pop songs.  They are also using internet technology to find more information about these recording artist's and their songs.  Even though they are scheduled to  perform a Be Bop jazz  concert they know virtual nothing about the music nor it's musicians.  Using internet technology this WebQuest will engage students in  researching Be Bop jazz music.

Goals and Objectives

This module will show students how the internet can be used to research any style of music starting with Bebop jazz.  At the conclusion of this module the students will:
  • Complete a comprehensive report that defines Bebop jazz music
  • Have background knowledge on musicians for the instruments they play
  • Identify and perform songs indigenous to the Be Bop jazz era
  • Know the social issues that influenced the music of these time periods
  • Identify current social issues that can/do influence music today

Audience 

The audience for this web quest will be high school students participating in the jazz concert.  

Prerequisites 

  • Current performing member in concert band
  • Current performing member in jazz band
  • Experience using the internet

Subject-Matter 

Upon completion of this assignment, students will have worked in teams to develop a  research paper on Bebop jazz music.  In this time period they will be looking performance styles that influenced the music of this era. Upon completion of this assignment the groups will present their reports to the class.   At the time of their concert, each student will speak briefly on the musician who played the instruments they play.  After this brief introduction the ensemble will perform the songs they introduced.

Instructional Plan      

  1. Tell band not to take out their instruments
  2. Tell band Tuesdays and Fridays we will meet in the computer lab for WebQuest tasks
  3. Ask class what elements R&B music has that Hip Hop doesn't.
  4. Ask class to tell what they know about Bebop jazz.
  5. Tell class they're going to listen to a song from the Bebop Jazz era
  6. Play Salt Peanuts
  7. For the following questions write band's response on the board
  8. Ask what intruments were lead 
  9. Ask class what instruments played soloes
  10. Define the tempo of the song
  11. Ask if song was big band or small ensemble 
  12. Ask what mood the song evoked
  13. Pass WebQuest to class 
  14. Tell band this WebQuest is a 3 week project 
  15. Review WebQuest with class
  16. Have sections chose solo artist from their instrument family to research.  i.e. Brass, Dizzy Gillespie 
  17. Sections register their members with teacher 
  18. Pass floppy disk to band
  19. Tell band to save all their work to disk
  20. Tell band reviews of the disk will bone evey Friday.
