The the intended audience for my WebQuest is grades 3-6.  It will be performed by myself in school, primarily in the computer lab.  This will alleviate any potential problems such as the children not having adult supervision while working on the Internet and maneuvering through the WebQuest by themselves.

Parents will be notified in writing by me regarding the Unit and their child's involvement on the computer and the Internet.  They will also be given the URL of the WebQuest and an overview of what it covers so that they will be able to assist and supervise their child at home for continued education.  They will also be advised of the Learning Web Quiz.  This is a tool to determine basic computer skills and technology awareness of anyone working on a computer and Internet, to determine if any deficiencies exist.

Prior to the introduction of this WebQuest in school, supplemental lessons will be taught in order to prepare the students.  This will be done by linking this topic to activities and lessons.  There will also be a field trip planned to go to the zoo (either Brookfield or Lincoln Park), so that they can experience some species of wildlife first hand. If that is not possible they will do that as a class virtually through the Internet.  Students will be introduced to the term "wildlife in captivity".  Parents and guardians will be encouraged to participate in all of our activities and  throughout the WebQuest.

Students and parents will be informed of my expectations for the WebQuest, along with the students conduct during it and the anticipated time frame for its completion.  They will also know what to do if they encounter any difficulties with any aspect of it and its implementation.

DURING THE WEBQUEST:

The students will be paired and grouped.  The computers will be checked to make sure they are in good working order.  While on the computers and Internet, the students will be constantly monitored to assure that they are in their appropriate places.  Each student will be given a red plastic cup with their names written on it by me to be placed on top of the computer monitor when they have some difficulty.  Prior to using the
red cup, they can also ask their partner or neighbor for assistance if it is done quietly before trying to get my attention.  Students will be discouraged from talking out loud since that would only disturb the entire class and disrupt the learning process.

POST WEBQUEST ACTIVITIES:

After the students have successfully performed the WebQuest, oral presentations will be required.  These presentations will allow the students to present to their classmates what they have learned.  There will also be peer and self evaluations sessions and they will be free to say what they thought of the entire activity and if they accomplished the goals and expectations I required of them.

I will also ask them how the WebQuest could be improved and what could be changed if necessary. Finally, the students will be encouraged to make cross curriculum connections by comparing what they have done in their other activities and classes that ties in with this lesson.

BACKUP OPTIONS:

If all of the computers are not available or if there are any technical difficulties experienced, such as Internet access is not available these are some alternative plans that will be used.  The students will be asked to work in alternating "centers".  There will be groups assigned to work in the library to do some research, another will be assigned to work on their pre-writing project and a third will be assigned to work in a "discussion group".  The library group will be able to use printed materials such as National Geographic Magazines and Encyclopedia Britannia as resources on the lesson.  There will also be printed sheets available from the WebQuest.  As a class we will watch the designated films mentioned in the resource section of this WebQuest.  Lastly, there will be
additional computer lab time scheduled for any lost sessions.
