ALL ABOUT ME

Ms. La Pharyll Baffield

Let me start at the beginning.  I have known since the sixth grade that I wanted to be a teacher.  Probably because I played school so much and I was always the teacher.  During my school days I remember thinking that the teacher had a God-like presence who knew everything and could never ever be wrong.  My first memories were during kindergarten, which was a great learning and enriching experience.  Whoever wrote the book "Everything I Learned I Learned in Kindergarten" certainly knows what they were talking about.  My teacher, Miss Legg who taught at Schiller School, was the first person who realized that I needed to wear glasses.  She made me feel special because she took the extra time to contact my parents.  But my greatest inspiration came from my fifth grade teacher Mrs. Benford who taught at Rudyard Kipling School.  I idollized Mrs. Benford and everything she did.  I patterned my handwriting from her and promised myself that I would be just like her when I grew up.  The rest of my elementary days were also enriching.
My next milestone was high school, which I chose carefully so that I would be well prepared for college.  I attended John Marshall Harlan High School.  High school was a conglomerate of new ideas and information which I enjoyed tremendously.   I was involved in many activities which included Cheer Club, Year Book Committee, Student Council, and FTA (Future Teachers of America).
College days also proved fruitful to my future goals.  My eyes were focused on the end results of being a teacher and future role model.  College was exciting, adventurous, and I had numerous learning experiences.  I had no ides then that the abundance of knowledge learned there would assist me for the rest of my life.  Upon graduation from Chicago State University, I embarked upon my teaching career, expecting to educate future generations.
It's been a long and tiresome road to reach my current position as a dedicated educator (many refer to as a teacher).  The children are the best aspect of my profession.  I live to see the look of confidence and understanding on their innocent faces.  Teaching has been all that I expected and more.  Molding minds and educating not only from books, but also important social values that are needed for future references.  I have relished teaching for the past twenty some odd years and I currently still enjoy all its rewards.
During my teaching career I started with the private Christian Schools and am presently with the Chicago Board of Education.  I am employed at the Meville Weston Fuller Elementary School with Mrs. Patricia Davis-Kennedy as our Principal and Mr. Gregory Taylor as our Assistant Principal.  We are located in the Bronzeville area.  I am a second grade teacher.
I am currently enrolled in the Urban Teaching Masters Program at Concordia University.  I know this universal experience will increase my awareness and wisdom in the classroom.
My philosphy which is applied daily is "I can learn, I know I can learn, and I will learn".  This philsophy is instilled everyday and my student believe that this can happen for each one of them.  I encourage parent participation and will not hesitate to contact them for the advancement of their children.  I have an open-door policy in my classroom, which implies that at any given time anyone is welcome to visit.
