The Shaatnez Lab Quest

.

Note: This activity was created as a sample webquest for J-Wit , Summer 2003.  The webquest is an inquiry-based activity, requiring students to develop skills using Internet-based research,  with an emphasis on Judaic textual resources

You are a member of a new young Jewish community in Linenwool,  NJ.  Your community now has a shul, a school, and even a Mikvah.  However, when people buy new clothes that need to be checked for Shaatnez, they must send them to NY.  Many people are complaining about the inconvenience, others are not sure which of their new clothes need to be sent for a check up, others yet are questioning the need to do so in this day and age.

Many of them want to learn more about where this extraordinary law comes from and if it has a basis in Torah and Halacha.  Some wonder what may be the reasons God commanded us to keep this strange Mitzvah. Rabbi Ben Chacham, your shul’s leader, has appointed you to serve on the research committee for the observance of Shaatnez.
