What do you think a
digital library is?
A digital library is an electronic library built
around predetermined information on given topics. The information
is stored in a digital format so that more information can be stored in
a small space somewhere in never-neverland (smiles)
What did I learn today?
Today I learned how to make a web page
using Composer? I also learned that a mind is a dangerous thing to
leave at work. (more smiles) I think that I am going to like this class.

Today I am linking to WIT,
Known as Web Institute for Teachers.
This was a good lesson. Based on today's activities I decided to
incorporate some of them in my Journal. I did a review for myself
about terms common to the web, like HTML. Realizing that you really
need to know these terms if you are preparing to share this experience
with your coworkers and/or students. The modeling of the web site
for the day was informative. I am looking forward to using these sites
as well as sharing them with others. I feel that creating a web site
is not as easy as it appears to be while working with our instructors. But
I am willing to try to do this thing because our department at "The Board"
should have it's site updated, At this time we do not
have a person maintaining the site.

Working with librarians in developing
book list we have used the web site developed by Peggy Sharpie. I
share sites used to get information on books to consider adding to their
books list. These books are reviewed and short summaries are provided
for each title. Then various links can be followed to acquire additional
information on the books and/or order. Some of the site provide book
activities for the librarians. Peggy Sharpe can be found at :
The email situation is still a problem
for me, I hope that it will be solved by tomorrow. Overall this
was a good institute day.

Today was an interesting day. Wit
provided a really nice "free" lunch. The whole Wit group, all
the Greek Letters, shared the same space to hear the keynote speaker,
Diane Joseph, share her project entitled "Harnessing Learner Passion".
We also had a spill from the Collabatory Project folks from
Northwestern University. This project appears to be great, as projects
are when the developer shares his/her info with you. I also found it
of interest that this same group will be presenting this project to two groups
of librarians (60-75) on two different days. The first session
will take place on July 23 & 24 and the other 29 & 30.
These will be day long sessions. The class game was great fun
and it allowed the class to see their strengths and weaknesses.

Worked on fpt and ecuip. I was
still confused about the process for ftp. I also had a problem installing
the programs provided for the course onto my laptop. I finally gave
up the ghost at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. I finally got my email
working. I setup an account with Yahoo and now I can join my
fellow classmates on the list serve. If you're happy emailing, just do it.
The best part of the day was finding a parking spot directly in front
of the library. Yes you can be happy about the little things in life.

I have discovered that I am not an
on-the-spot type of person. That which I think I know seems to go
"South". I just may have to work on this little quark in the development.
I have become comfortable with ecuip and will share as well as
use this site with other librarians. I am a little slow getting started
but I think I just may be on a roll (not a real fast one). The activity
today was interesting and it made you use the site. Sharing the answers
and how different persons arrived at their answers was interesting and will
help moving around in ecuip with a degree of efficiency. An observation:
you can kind of tell when various classmates were in school by their
willingness and speed at doing the Witdelta activities

Melva Samuels not in class for these
three days but she had class on the brain. I looked at some web sites
using ecuip and some other web directories. I looked at some Civil
War sites while looking for information on Abe Lincoln. This proved
to be somewhat involved and enlightening. I worked on some of
the bells and whistles to use in constructing a web page. Some of the
things one can do with these bells and whistle is indeed interesting. I
also learned that you just have to play around with some of the things concerning
constructing a web page. Just make mistakes and redo, in other words,
"just do it!". It helps to have a logic head on your shoulders and
instructors who do not get upset with the varying paces of the students..
You also have to work on this project daily.

Today is a catch-up day. I still
have a problem with FTP. I seem to always forget one of the steps.
I guess I need a cheat sheet to put next to my computer. We had
a brief break for ice cream, then we worked all the way until 5:00 p.m.
I learned about gardening from Deborah Norwood today when she introduced
her web site from last year. Christie showed the class how to link
our email to our web sites. I also learned how to link web site from
my email. When the instructor is showing you what to do, it is a piece
of cake. I also started my home page with information about me and
I added my picture to the page. I am sure that all of this is very
easy, I just make it hard. I'll have to work on this during the next
week or two. I really like getting the web links from my fellow Wits.
Well tomorrow will be a new day. Oh, I got a chance to share
my problem about the CD we were given with the person who did the work. I
really appreciate the time that it took for him to do this but three littler
problems that we may have enchanted should have been part of a warning statement.

I finally got the hang of the process
of ftp and how to link web sites to a page in Composer. I also learned
how to find clip art on the web and how to save and insert this art into
my document and resave the document. I finally decided on my project
and now I can really get started. The name of the project may change
but the concept will remain the same. The web site shared by my fellow
classmate was a good cite for librarians as well as teachers. I will
use this cite as one of my links. \

Today I learned how to build an "Inquiry" page. We
went to the UIUC site and became members of the inquiry unit. We were
walked throught the steps in creating this page. We also learned how
to edit a unit and then how to spin off from a unit. Today
I presented an educational database called "FactsforLearning. This site
is not free but you can get a free trial . This is a great site for
research purposes at the elementary school level. We also had to decide on
a topic for a test inquiry unit. I decided to use the same question
that I am working on for my digital library.
